A quote has come to mind several times over the last two weeks, and I decided today to look into its origins. I must say, it surprised me to learn that the quote I’ve heard was incorrect, and the author was J.R.R. Tolkien.
“All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost.”
I have found deep comfort in a standing meditation that focuses on imaging yourself as a tree, swaying back and forth feeling your feet on the ground. Then as you come to center naturally, you picture your roots growing deep into the Earth, so deep that no storm, no fire, no snowfall can touch the deepest roots.
Even if your tree falls, can it be hoisted back up? Can there by props to slowly raise your tree? Do you need a crane? Do you need people, or something else?
While you may feel lost, there might just be props or levers nearby that escape your notice. Allow them to lift you. Begin to trust in their care. Just because you wander does not mean you are lost. It may be too hard to ask for care. When you are ready, the care you seek will find you.
